We sometimes forget that historically Chinese immigrants were subjected to some the worst consequences of our country's racist and xenophobic fears. Initially Chinese laborers were encouraged to enter America to help fill a labor shortage. Chinese immigrants made up 80% of the workers on the Transcontinental Railroad. However, by the last quarter of the 19th century anti-Chinese sentiment by Whites in the United States severely limited migration and increased violence against Chinese. The Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) not only prohibited Chinese immigration but also denied Chinese immigrants naturalization limiting their right to vote, sit on juries and own real estate.. This work is meant to draw attention to this shameful history, employing Victorian trade cards, a dancing wood caricature and a clownish name that stereotyped early Chinese immigrants – stereotyping being one of the main ways prejudice is spread.
Medium Old wood “Chinese checkers” game board, antique brass rail/wood beam toy railroad tracks, antique folk art handmade wood toy train, vintage hand carved racist caricature of Chinese man, antique trade (advertising) cards with racist stereotypes of Chinese men, antique hand painted & inlay wood frame on top.
