Commentary: If you look closely, you can see the words “guaranteed harmless” on the makeup box inside framed box with the two dancing figures. The incredible hubris of minstrel shows was not only that they perpetuated racism, but that they did so under the guise that it was all just good harmless entertainment.
Medium: Constructed carnival box with racist windup 1930's dancing tin toy, flag parts, blackface makeup & painted transfers on sides, 5 constructed “antique weaving loom” wood frames of blackface minstrel music sheets, old wood framed photos of boys & man in Uncle Sam & clown costumes in minstrel show and White men in blackface.
