Commentary: The Magdalene asylums, also known as the Magdalene Laundries, (18th to the late 20th century) were religious institutions set up by the Catholic Church to house “fallen women”. The women – young girls usually - confined in these institutions were in essence prisoners; and were forced to do institutionalized laundry for years. This piece – with a doll crucified on a portable ironing board – pays homage to those women and speaks out against the atrocity of these asylums.
Medium: Victorian doll hung on an old portable wood & cloth ironing board fashioned into a cross
