Commentary: This piece is from my feminist series; works where I try to draw attention to the injustices and atrocities that societies inflict upon women. Bound feet was a practice that literally crippled Chinese woman for a thousand years, and vestiges of it still linger in spike heel and high heel fashion of the present day. The practice of foot binding girls finally ended by 1949. But somewhere in China today, an old woman hobbles along as the Last Lily Foot.
Medium: Antique Chinese jewelry box reconstructed into a rickshaw-like wheelchair with an Antique Chinese carved wood puppet head, bisque arms, doll carriage wheels; inside case is antique “lily foot” shoe next to a museum artifact made in old cloth of a bound foot, photos on the doors of young & old women with bound feet, photo in the drawer of 20th century girl
