Commentary: Today the normal expectancy is that children born will grow to adulthood. This was not always so. Before vaccines were developed to protect against infectious diseases like smallpox, yellow fever, typhoid and measles, along with improved understanding of the benefits of proper sanitation, it was common for several siblings – even entire families - to be wiped out by these and other communicable diseases. This work references those times when being in mourning over the loss of a child (in this case twins) was sadly commonplace. Unbelievably there are now forces at work which could overturn the effects of these incredible medial advances.
Medium: Beaded Victorian cape, bonnet, parasol, boots, framed tintype, embroidered cloth background, antique wood frame, picture light.
