I converted an old shoe shine box into a simulated movie theater where a Black audience is looking at a news reel of Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics. Owens was the African-American athlete who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, much to the consternation of Hitler and the Nazis who we hoping the games would show case their belief in the superiority of the Aryan race. Unfortunately, Owens' international fame did not change attitudes towards Blacks in his own country.
Medium: Old handmade shoeshine box reconstructed into a toy theater, 10 vintage racist “dancing dolls” as the audience, framed metal movie poster photo transfers, wood screen with photo transfer of newsreel of 1936 Olympics, glass, metal & wood shrine remade into box office with wood racist doll inside.
