Commentary: The tiny black dolls costumed in southern belle dresses, are actually souvenir dinner bells formerly sold at Plantation gift shops. Similar dinner bells were used during the period of slavery to summon house and kitchen slaves to the dining room. Dressing tiny black dinner bells in cute White women southern belle costumes, like its counter part, the minstrel show where White people dress up like stereotype caricatures of Black people, soft sell our history of slavery and trivialize its horrors.
