Commentary: A enslaved woman born in 1849 would have seen a lot by her 72 birthday: She would have experienced being a slave, gone thru the hardships of the Civil War, experienced the joy of freedom, followed by the disappointment that came after her liberation. Today there is a movement among many conservatives to quell the story that she and millions of other Black Americans lived. We should not let that happen. There are valued lessons in their struggles which can be drawn upon if we only have the courage to acknowledge them.
