Commentary: The Tulsa Riot also known as the Black Wall Street Massacre erupted on May 31, 1921 the day after the title of this piece, in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, at the time one of the wealthiest Black communities in the United States. The devastation was immense – 35 square city blocks burned and destroyed; hundreds were hospitalized, and scores were killed. The horror and disruption that was about to descend on this prosperous Black middle class community is what I am highlighting in this piece.
